About Lifeline Australia
Lifeline first began as a telephone counselling service in Sydney on 16 March 1963.
Lifeline is now an international organisation, with over 300 centres in 19 countries.
Lifeline provides Australians with access to 24-hour telephone counselling, in their time of need. The 13 11 14 service now receives around 500,000 calls per year and is administered from Lifeline Centres operating out of 59 locations around the country.
Lifeline was founded by the Rev. Alan Walker at the Methodist Central Mission in Sydney. His vision was that there be a community service available to people anytime, anywhere, to provide care and support - and he believed that the telephone could provide the key. Since that time Lifeline services have grown throughout Australia and in many parts of the world. Today, we acknowledge Lifeline's Christian background, and sharing compatible beliefs and values, our centres engage in a common service of care and support for people in need.
